Prepare NOW for hurricane season!

Hurricane Ike

Yep, that’s right.  Hurricane season is upon us.  You need to start planning NOW for your dog!

First, get a plan in your mind.  Are you going to evacuate?  Or ride it out in Houston?  Decide now on a trigger that you’ll use to tell you it’s time to go.  When Hurricane Ike hit us two years ago, it was a category 3 and a direct hit.  Most of Houston sustained substantial damage and the power was out for days if not weeks.  At Deogi, we didn’t get much damage, but didn’t have power for 17 days.  17 L O N G and hot days.

So decide now if and when you are going to evacuate.

If you are going on vacation during the summer, and are leaving your dog at a boarding facility, find out what their plan is.  Are they “hunkering down” through the storm, or will they evacuate too.  If they evacuate, what will happen to your dog?  Think about these things NOW.  You certainly do not want to be worrying about this if you are thousands of miles away in Cancun.

Right now, you should make a “survival kit” for your dog.  Include canned dog food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, can opener, food dishes, first aid kit and other supplies with you in case they’re not available later.

I cannot stress how important it is to have your immunization and medication records with you.  All shelters and boarding facilities require immunizations to allow your pet in.  Be certain you have them and that the shots are current RIGHT NOW.   Don’t wait.

Be sure your dog has a collar and tags – a rabies tag as well as a tag with a phone number at which you can be reached.  Careful about which number you’ll use – you might not return home to check messages for several days and it’s possible that phone lines will be down.  Include a number that you are certain can be reached.

38ike

Do NOT leave your dog at home if you evacuate!  When people were evacuating during Ike, I was being told we should leave too.  Leave the dogs, I was told, they’ll be fine.  I responded, “well, if they will be “fine” so will I.”

All aboard – the bus to Phoenix

As you know, we are always overwhelmed with dogs!  Luckily, we are able to send dogs to our group in Phoenix for adoption to wonderful people.  This weekend, we loaded up five little pupsters for a trip to Phoenix.  The trip was broken into legs and a volunteer drove each leg.  One from Houston to College Station, one from College Station to Waco, then Waco to Lubbock and then on to Phoenix.  Here are the photos!

It’s so wonderful to have such giving volunteers.  We search for more and more ways to save little dogs and without these wonderful volunteers, we just could not.  Thanks to our LSSTLAR HEROS!!

Voltaire checks in to Gulf Coast for EKG and Ultrasound! HELP!

Voltaire Checks in for Echo and Ultrasound

Voltaire Checks in for Echo and Ultrasound

Little Voltaire went for his exam today at Gulf Coast Veterinary Internal Medicine.  They all agree that he is one of the cutest little guys we’ve brought in.  Dr. Jones, who treats all of my personal dogs for their heart problems, cushings, etc. - all of the complicated problems – is handling Voltaire’s case.  He thought the tumor was possibly cancer. He recommended an aspirate,  ultrasound and x-rays to see if 1) it is cancerous and 2) if it has spread.  Voltaire has also developed a huge heart murmur so is also getting an ultrasound of his heart to see what is up with that.

This is double the procedures we initially estimated and the net cost is estimated to be between $850 and $975.  So this has raised the total amount of funds needed for our April Showers dogs.

We’re now only at 38%  of what is needed to vet these April Showers dogs.   To donate for little Voltaire, Dora and the other April Showers kids, please click HERE.

Or go HERE to tell me you are sending a check!!  If you want to do the donation via a credit card, you can download the credit card authorization form HERE.  Just fill it out and fax it to me at 713-583-7816 or 281-754-4851.  Email me to tell me you are faxing – we get a lot of faxes and I want to be certain to pick these up quickly!!

Dora Ranger is home and Voltaire needs to visit Gulf Coast tomorrow!!

Dora Barker Deogi 05-04-2010_1042

Dora Ranger had her necrotic eye removed on Monday.  She came home today.  She’s at my house in my little “medical” ward, AKA the kitchen, so I can watch her closely.

She’s still in a lot of pain but hopefully the drugs tonight will help.  While she was under for the eye, she also got a dental and was spayed.  Lucky thing too, she was going into heat.

Uncensored pictures are on our facebook site at www.facebook.com/lsstlar.  Warning, they are graphic.

ALSO, little Voltaire, one of our “at the last minute” medical emergencies last week needs to go to Gulf Coast tomorrow.  Right now, our funding for all of the April Showers kids (all medical emergencies that happened at the last minute last week, including Dora) is at 52% so we still need a bunch of help.  Please!  Help?    The total for all seven dogs, including Sputnik, Sushi, Depp, Finnegan, Lindy’s very expensive bladderstone surgery, Teeter and Dora was just at $2700.  We have raised, so far, $1400.

Dora Ranger had her necrotic eye removed on Monday.  Dr. Moore was pretty upset that it had been exposed for so long.  He estimated “weeks.”  But, she’s on the mend now.

Urgent need! Little tzu with eyeball out of socket

Yes, I know …. I said no more until we get funds raised for the Ark Lhasas and the April Showers pups.  But, darn, the shelter called last night asking me to pick up this tzu that just came in with her eyeball literally bulging out of her socket.  I’m not going to post pictures here because they are W A Y too graphic.   But, you can go to our facebook page, www.facebook.com/lsstlar and check her horribly damaged eye.

Meet Dora Barker…This is the shelter picture and the photos I took when I got her to Deogi…..Notice that she has a fancy blue and blingy collar.

Three medical EMERGENCIES – need help please!

Our medical emergencies last week has put everything else on hold.  Please help us so we can help more little pupsters!  We got so many in so quickly, we called the group April Showers!!

Depp Barker Deogi 04-28-2010_1022

Depp Barker, horribly matted and neglected little lhasa boy.  So SWEET!  Deaf, cataracts.

Nela PicDeogi 04-25-2010_1001Deogi 04-25-2010_1002

Finnegan Barker another old, deaf, blind.  Did I say old.  But so so sweet.

Deogi 04-25-2010_1008Deogi 04-25-2010_1020

How cute Finnegan has become.  He is pretty old – probably at least 12-13.  One bad eye, horrible ears, grade IV heart murmur.  He desperately needs a human.  He’s suffered so much already and really just needs a home.

Teeter Ranger – eye injured and could not be saved – had to be removed asap.  His bill was around $250.

Deogi 04-29-2010_1031

Lindy Harris – beautiful small black lhasa boy –  went in for removal of a benign tumor from his eye lid and a routine dental and they found a mess of bladderstones – two blocking his uretha and consequently causing his bladder to blow up.  In the x-ray below, you can see that although he has some tiny stones in his bladder, he also has two blocking his uretha.  Those were the problem.  He couldn’t urinate and his bladder was already in the process of blowing up.  The big red circle approximates the size of his bladder.  He HAD to have surgery today.  His total, including the tumor removal and the bladderstones is about $1050.

Adorable Voltaire Ranger – our groomer at Deogi thought that he had impacted anal glands so off to the vet we went for what I thought would be a simple procedure.  Nope, our vet thinks that perhaps Voltaire has a tumor in his rectum.  Ugh.   And given the sensitive location of the tumor, he referred us to Gulf Coast for the work up.  I’m estimating that the workup, including an exam and ultrasound should be around $500.  I’ll check with them tomorrow to verify this estimate.  If he needs surgery, we’ll have to raise those funds later.  Right now, I’m scared to death for Voltaire.  He is just a darling little sweet boy and I love him to death.

 Voltaire 2

We took in two in Arizona – little Sushi, an adorable 9 pound shih tzu girl and Sputknik an adorable little tzu boy.  Thankfully, all they need is basic vetting.

Sputtnik Sputnik – adorable young male

Just for ease, I’m going to lump all of these needy kids into one effort and call it “April Showers.”  I just hope May does bring flowers.

So we really, really, really need your help this weekend.  These babies need help!

Then we have the ARKANSAS ABANDONED LHASAS!

So, right now, we’re in a whole lot of hurt.  Thankfully, all of the money for the heartworm dogs was raised, but we still need $735 for the Arkansas Lhasas abandoned near the National Forest in Arkansas.

Thanks to the following for their donations for the heartworm dogs, the Abandoned lhasas and now the April Shower Kids:  Grace Hewett, Donna Ferris in honor of Sally, Mary Kuntz, Doug Cameron, Anne Laquidara, Eugene Bonos in memory of Nikki, Janet Bello, Lorna Van De Weile, Anna Dee Lastick, Barbara Grabell in memory of Kimmie, Pat Heitmann, Diana Goldman, Rebecca Caldow, Linda Bridges, Lisa Schwartz, Christine Hutchison, Jean Smith, Deborah Shure, Jill Kirk, Dale Stone, Mary Kay Moore, Impulse Devices, Nancy Croft, Dale Stone, Lael Ward – To Casey and Kelly, I love and miss you both more than you’ll ever know, Teresa Brewer, Chantal Teasdale.

The ARK Abandoned Lhasas – yes dogs abandoned near a national forest in Arkansas – the “abandoner” probably thought that if they got into the forest, no one would ever find them!   We down to just $735 to vet them.   There are many, many of the original photos of these dogs on our FACEBOOK PAGE HERE.    I know its been a hard year, but if you can possibly help with what I anticipate being some pretty significant vet bills, please CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL

For the April Showers dogs, including Voltaire, Teeter and Lindy, please CLICK HERE for paypal.

Thanks for the following wonderful people, we have raised just about 10% of what we need for the April Showers: Dale Stone, Gail Ciesielski, Diana Goldman, Doug Cameron, Barbara Grabell, Christina Richardson, Savanna Tucker.
