Voltaire is coming home Friday!!!

Voltaire Blackberry_Jul142011_1007

Yes, little man is doing well.  He ate this morning – real chicken.  And so far, has kept it down.  His stats are good and they are going to release him to come home TOMORROW afternoon!  YEAH!!

I was so excited when I visited today – he licked my hand.  He hasn’t done that the entire week he was in ICU.  He was up for a few seconds, with his tail up in the air!  I cried!

He still has the tube in so that we can make sure he gets his meds.  I am going to have to learn how to do this now.

Voltaire”s fund is at $4300 already!  Woot!  We are estimating that, with our discount, the total will be around $6800.

I am so excited that people have rallied for this adorable and deserving little boy.  Because of all of you, we continue to save little lives.

We just need to get that little bit more to get him out of the hospital tomorrow!!

If you would like to donate via Paypal, we have a chipin set up so you can monitor where he stands.

Voltaire’s fund is already at 30%!

Our little man (that is my nickname for him) is just under $2500 of the $6800 right now.  I think with a couple more days in ICU, things will turn out well!   I am so excited that people have rallied for this adorable and deserving little boy.  Because of all of you, Lone Star has a great reputation for taking on the hard cases and Voltaire certainly does fit that description!  I just hope we can keep this going so  he can come back to his forever foster home healthy!!

Voltaire is getting stronger.

I just visited this adorable lil man and he is looking much more alert and curious about things.  Still weak, but he’s gaining strength and weight.  I don’t understand why he isn’t getting more donations.

Is it that we shouldn’t be doing this for an older dog?  We’ve always rallied behind the very sick and older ones.  Is there something about Voltaire that isn’t appealing?  Please tell me.

The amazing folks at Gulf Coast will be trying him on real food today.

How cute is this little guy?

Please help us keep Mr. Voltaire around a little longer.  We will need serious help paying his bill when he is released later this week.  So far, we have raised over $1000 for him, but will need quite a bit more.  I really do not want to have to pull him out of the hospital when he is recovering so nicely.

Voltaire is improving!!

Voltaire in hospital

The call last night was fantastic.  Voltaire responded over the weekend to the antibiotics for his liver infection.   His liver enzyme value was 1/3 of what it was on Friday!!  This is a significant jump in the RIGHT direction.  But, his bloodwork also showed increased levels of amylase and lipase which indicates pancreatitis.  UGH.  Tests yesterday confirmed that.  So, little Voltaire had a nasal gastric tube inserted to give him nutrition which does not require his body to digest anything.  This allows his pancreas to recover.  Last night, the vet reported that he was up and walking around and even got testy with one of the techs who is taking his blood pressure.  YEAH, go Voltaire.

But, the hospital bill is already (as of 8 am Wednesday morning) at $6800.  I know some of you will think it is ridiculous to spend money like this on ONE SINGLE little RESCUE dog, but we treat our rescues like they were YOUR dog.  And remember what a fighter Mr. Voltaire is.  He came to us early in 2010 after being abandoned in a rural area of Houston.  Cute, adorable, tiny little boy was left to fend for himself and thankfully, a good samaritan brought him in.  We soon found out that he had a really bad heart murmur and got that stabilized then, found a tumor in one of his anal sacs.  The surgery to remove the tumor was successful, although it took him quite a while to recover.  And, the tumor was determined to be benign.  Then about two months ago, he had a episode with his heart, but again, pulled out of it with the help of the wonderful experts at Gulf Coast Internal Medicine and Critical Care.

We routinely check Voltaire’s bloodwork and heart and this routine checkup is what prompted us to put him into the hospital on Friday.

We try hard to do right by all of our puppers and Voltaire is a little senior old man that deserves a little more time in a happy home.  He’s lived in the same foster home for over a year now and is loved beyond words.

Please help us keep Mr. Voltaire around a little longer.  We will need serious help paying his bill when he is released later this week.  So far, we have raised over $1000 for him, but will need quite a bit more.  I really do not want to have to pull him out of the hospital when he is recovering so nicely.

INDY is standing!!

NOTE THIS MORNING FROM ELAINE, INDY’s Foster mom.

INDY UPDATE!! Big excitement when I came home from hill training this morning about 7:00 — we have POOP, so he’s feeling well enough to "assume the position"! His eyes are a lot more alert this morning, and he’s found his voice! Here’s a very bad picture of him standing and eating his breakfast. Spot on his back is from the fentanyl patch. Bandages are on both hips. Very sweet dog!!

Voltaire is back in ICU–for a liver infection

Voltaire started feeling a bit down early in the week so I took him into GC for a few little tests.  The tests showed he had a tiny bit of pneumonia so we left a bit happy.  Then, shock!  The Dr. called to say his liver enzymes were sky high and he needed to come in immediately.  I literally dropped what I was doing and ran home to get him.  I was at the hospital in a record 30 minutes!

He was admitted to ICU and has stayed over the weekend.  He is weak and not eating.  His heart is doing well, even though they had to reduce some of his heat meds, but he needs time to climb out of whatever is affecting his liver.  The ICU is $600 per night PLUS all of the tests.  They called today to say his bill is at $3700 already, but they will give us a 25% discount on his treatment.

Voltaire came to us a year ago when he was abandoned on a rural road to fend for himself.  We quickly found that he had a bad heart AND he had a benign tumor in one of his anal sacs.  He survived a serious surgery, even with his bad heart and has been doing exceptionally well until this week.  He’s a fighter and we would love to give him more time to understand love!

I know it’s crazy to want to spend thousands on a dog that might not make it, but I have never been one to give up.  If the Dr. says he has no hope, we’ll call it.  But until then, I hope we can keep him going until we can figure out what is affecting him.

We have a CHIPIN set up for him HERE.  I know it’s a tough call, and we’ll go where you all dictate, but please consider this adorable little cutie.  I would really like him to know a few more months of love.

Indy Ranger (AKA Captain Jack) July 4, 2011

I just got off the phone with Dr. Benjamino. Indy is doing well this morning. He can stand with assistance but is still reluctant to take steps. This is expected with the extensive surgery he just had. He is scheculed to go home tomorrow and will spend his next few weeks with the amazing Elaine.

We are still a tiny bit short on his funding for the surgery.  If you can contribute, please go to our chipin page.  CHIPIN for Indy Ranger’s surgery.

If you want to send a check, just go to www.shihtzu-rescue.com/pledgeform and let me know that it’s coming.  And, if you’d rather make a donation straight to Gulf Coast, call 713-693-1122.  He is under Indy Ranger Osborn.

Thanks for all you do to allow us to save little dogs like Indy.
