So, little Mae went to visit Dr. Chris Jones, of the Internal Medicine department of Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists on Friday.

The objective of the visit was to figure out why the amikacin antibiotics targeting the ecoli/staph/strep colony in her nasal cavity wasn’t working as quickly as we thought it would.  He studied the CT scan done last week (thank you very generous people!!), and saw a great deal of mucous still in that left nasal cavity and also quite a bit of damage to the bones as well.  Although Mae’s external symptoms are significantly better – no more constantly running green snot – they can tell from the CT that progress is not in line with a six week round of the antibiotics.

Dr. Jones suggested that we scope her nasal passage to see if there was something else up there that didn’t show up on the CT scan.   So, here I am back – dare I even write it – asking for more funding for this adorable little girl.  I so hope we are on the cusp of discovering what "ails her" so we can make her better.

The scope is a camera device that they will insert into her nostril and literally "see" what is up her nose.

The cost, with a significant discount, is estimated to be from $850-$1100.  I know this sort of feels like throwing money down this bottomless pit, but I promise this little girl is worth it.

Remember her story?  She was confiscated by the Houston SPCA from a breeder in Spring, TX just about two years ago.  She and her siblings we the stars of the Animal Planet Animal Cops Houston episode.  One of the siblings was an older female in severe pain – she was humanely euthanized by the HSPCA when they got custody of the dogs.

Five of the remaining seven were discovered to have heartworms and then came down with kennel cough while at the SPCA.  So they called us in to take the five with heartworms.  We named them Julius, Augustus, Flavia and Octavius.  You all contributed toward the heartworm treatment in July/August 2007 and they all recovered and all but Mae were adopted.  Julius lives in Dallas, Octavious in New Orleans, Augustus in Austin and Flavia in the Houston Area.

We really want to get little Mae healthy enough for a home of her own!!  We need to have at least half of the above by Tuesday morning – her scope is scheduled for Tuesday – and the rest when we pick her up that evening.  If you can donate, please CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL, or GO HERE TO PLEDGE TO SEND A CHECK or HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION FORM.

She appreciates what you have done already!

To fight this nasty MRSA, Little Mae is getting a daily injection of amikacin, the only antibiotic that her super bug seems to be sensitive to.  Unfortunately, this drug can also damage the kidneys, so to help her body deal with that, we give her fluids daily.  She actually doesn’t mind much now – she just sits on a lap getting pets for about 10 minutes.  This is one of my staff from Deogi helping Mae with her fluids.

Lucky little girl, she is, to have so many of you love her!

Thanks to all of you wonderful people, we met the wonderful matching challenge and received donations and donation pledges for what Mae needed today and actually a tiny bit more.

Here’s little Mae Mae with Monica, the surgery tech, looking a little worse for the wear after her procedure – Mae, not Monica – Monica always looks very alert and happy.  Mae on the other hand, was just a bit tired.

Dr. Hottinger, of the GCVS surgical team, did her procedure.  They did a CT scan of her sinus area to see how effective the antibiotics have been.  Here is one frame from the scan.

This scan shows the problems in Mae’s left sinus cavity.  The right shows a lot of black, which are the open areas, the left side is almost completey gray – which shows where the pus and infection still resides.  Although a bit better than six weeks ago, she’s still not healed.

I have to talk to the internal medicine specialist next week (he was out of town today) to see what we can do to hasten Mae’s healing.  Perhaps weekly nasal flushes.

From what I understand, GCVS has several cases of this type of super bug each week going through treatment now.  Scary, isn’t it.

MATCHING CHALLENGE TO GET MAE OVER THE FINISH LINE!

By the time Mae’s appointment time came around, she had $1675 in her fund thanks to all of the people below.  That was enough to put the deposit on her procedure, so we went forward.

Now a wonderful donor has come forward to get her over the line….

She has just issued a donation matching challenge for $350.  From now until I have to pick Mae up tomorrow, she will match the donations, dollar for dollar, up to $350 total.

This is the opportunity to make your donations count double!!

We were able to change Mae’s appointment to this afternoon to give us more time to raise the funds for her CT.

She needs this to make sure that the antibiotics she’s on are killing off the huge staff/strep/e-coli colony of bacteria that was eating away on her nasal cavity.  She already has some bone loss but hopefully the antibiotics are making headway on this evil bacteria.

We must be able to determine whether the antibiotics are making headway.  Miss Mae Mae needs your help asap!

Her total need is $2,350.  As of right now, she has $1675 - just over 70% of what she needs!  Thank you great people… thanks to Wylene Dunbar, Doug Cameron, Barbara Grabell in honor of Tye, Wendy Barnum, Rosemary Cody, in honor of Brigitte, Tami and Sam, Melissa Lombard, Anna Dee Lastick in memory of Augie, we still miss you, little dude, Lorraine Bucklan, anon, Lorna Van de Wiele, Jacquelyn Johnson in honor of precious Melissa, I still miss her every day, Jeanette Flexer, Lisa Schwartz (of Grooming by Lisa on Richmond Ave in Houston – fantastic grooming shop!!)-donation from Mae’s boyfriend, Huey!, Dale Stone, Mike Birke, Dana Siville, Fur Kids, Jean Smith, Donna Ferris, K Gerstley, Lael Ward in honor of my beautiful Kelly, Trudy Land in memory of Rosie, Vicki Wakefield, Victor Bosquez in honor of Bailey, Margaret Lubke, in celebration of the 15th birthday of our dear Oreo who came to us from Lone Star, along with his brother, Bobby, three years ago, Cindy Ruby, in honor of Chloe a puppymill rescue, Cynthia Datoni, Diane Richer, anon2. But we’ve got to keep plugging for this girl.  Please, pass this request around – this little girl needs help – lots of help!

If you can possibly help little Mae, please GO HERE to use paypal, or send a check HERE or use a credit card HERE.

First, I apologize for not posting sooner.  I had made myself a promise that I would post at least once a week, but then life got in the way.  Early in May, we had a very unfortunate happening at the Veterinary Emergency Referral Group (VERGI) here in Houston that has since consumed quite a lot of my time.  I will write you all the entire story later, but for now just know that attorneys are in the middle of it so you can imagine what it involves. Secondly, my beloved 12 year old Ginger, who has been battling lymphoma successfully since November 2006 (yes 2.5 years) came out of remission the first of May and we have been struggling with new drugs to put her back into remission.  She had a bad reaction to one of the drugs this week and is currently in ICU at the wonderful Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists Facility.

Finally, darn it!  Breeders and puppymills keep dumping dogs at our door.  Young dogs.  Healthy (well, relatively healthy) dogs.  And, I’m sure you heard of the 59 dog confiscation in San Angelo – most are shih tzu.  Thank goodness, Loree Levy and the ASTC is stepping in to help there because we just cannot take in that many dogs right now.

So, I’m done "whining" and on to business.

Mae Davis, one of the breeder confiscations from summer 2007, and a star of Animal Planet’s Animal Cops Houston program is currently being treated for MSRA (resistent bacteria).  She has to get an injection of one antibiotic each day, followed by 100 CC of subq fluids.  She also has several oral antibiotics each day.  She is progressing well.  She is finally more active than she’s been in a year.  But, we now need to run a CT scan to ensure that the antibiotics are destroying the Staph/Strep/E-coli colony in her nasal cavity.  That needs to happen this coming week but we definitely need $2350 for that procedure.  Additionally, her antibiotics are costing about $100 every 10 days and she’s been on them for the past couple of months.  This little gal is very deserving, especially after her horrible start in life, so please help us finally get her well.  I know that this horrible economic time has hit everyone hard, but even a tiny donation will help us continue to help these puppers.
