Update on Mandisa and Carme!

Thanks to all of you, both of these pupsters are on the road to recovery.  Little Mandisa has had both bladderstone surgery and also a minor surgery to correct a flaw in her eyelids.  Her eyes are extremely large and consequently, she was not able to close her eyes.  Her eyes were always very red and inflamed.  We took her to the eye clinic and they closed the eyelids a tiny amount.  Her eyes look fantastic and are healing well.  HERE is the original story on Mandisa.

Carme Burke is resting well after her very difficult surgery to correct a mess in her leg.

You have no idea how much we all appreciate you for what you’re doing for these little pups!

Carme and Mandisa update – Dec 1, 2009

Update on fundraising for Carme and Mandisa….

We have received several new donations for Carme.  Nothing yet for Mandisa, but I know you all, it will come.

Carme needs surgery!

The most urgent is CARME BURKE.  Her fund is getting there, but we only about $400 as of right now before she can have surgery.  It was scheduled for last week, but unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, we had to reschedule it for a future data.  We can’t go forward until her funds are ready.

The estimate to get Carme whole is right at $3500.  We have to reschedule her surgery for a future date – not to worry, thought, Dr. Beale will be back to do the surgery later in December if we can raise the funds.

Please help.  With the economic conditions, we need all the help we can get.  As you all know, we are getting requests left and right to take in dogs.  Many people just cannot afford these little guys right now and a lot of breeders are downsizing (yay) and even getting out of the dog selling business because it isn’t as profitable.  Bigger yay.
We just can’t do an expensive surgery like this until the funds are committed.  I’m sure you all understand.

You all are wonderful!  Never cease to amaze me with your generousity.  But, please pass this message around.  We definitely need more and more new people who love these little dogs.   It’s a more-than-full-time job just trying to keep them from dying.

Carme Burke – surgery fund update

Carme’s story

Little Carme Burke was rescued from the Pasadena Animal Control with a broken leg.  After our vet examined her, he found that her leg had healed in the broken position.  So, we were left with two options – amputate the leg or get her down to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists for an orthopedic specialist to fix it.

We took her for a consult with Dr. Brian Beale who is very certain that she can be fixed – his surgery estimate will total around $3,000 and we’ve already spent just at $500 for preliminary x-rays, vet visits, etc.   HERE is the original post about her situation.

As of Tuesday morning, we have raised $3105.50, which is only $400 short of where we need to be.  We can reschedule her surgery for later this month if we can raise the remaining $400 this week.

Huge thanks to Sarah Cabello, Marilyn Radler, Doug Cameron, Vicki Wakefield, Darnell Hester, Joyce and Mike Tate in memory of beautiful Star, Jeff Helton in memory of Casey, Mary Hailey, Mary Kay Moore, Lorna Van DeWeile, Julie Roberts, Donna Ferris in honor of Carme’s twin in Heaven, Sally, Anna Dee Lastik, Janet Bello, Lorraine Bucklan, Gail Ciesielski, Joyce Ycasas, Lael Ward in honor of my two beautiful girls, Casey and Kelly – I love you and miss you, Trisha Havis, Nancy Cowart, Lorraine Bucklan (again), Christine Hutchison, Eugene Bonos, Lisa Schwartz, Michael and Cheryl Oyaski, Leanne Wheatley, Doug Cameron, Vicki Wakefield, Fur Kids, Lori Hoffman, Rosemary Cody, Cicely Wynne, Mary Kay Moore, Margaret Lubke, Cogdell Bradshaw, Megan Stout, Patrick and Julie Minnucci in memory of little shih tzu prince Simon Minnucci, Kim Riordan, Patricia Barnett, Wendy Barnum, Dale Stone, Jeannie Flexer, LeAnne Wheatley, Wendy Barnum, Barbara Grabell, Doug Cameron, Linda Bridges, Sandra Spade, Jean Dick, Mike Burke, Wylene Dunbar.   You all ROCK!

This is Dr. Beale with Carme during the consult.  He, like the entire staff at GCVS, totally fell in love with her.

And then there is Mandisa!

Mandisa had to have a big bladderstone removed asap, when she had bloody urine.

The total cost, including x-rays, surgery and post-op hospitalization was around $950.

Mandisa also had surgery on her eyes just before Thanksgiving.  We’ll need another $300 for that so I’m rolling that into this plea.  I hope you don’t mind.

We need a total of $1250 to get her whole and up for adoption.  As of right now, she has a total of  $580 in her fun.  Thanks to Fur Kids, Barbara Moran, Sandra Brehm, Jeannie flexer, Gail Ciesielski, Sunny Goldberg, Linda Downs, Anna Dee Lastick, Christine Hutchison, Jill Kirk, Lorraine Bucklan, Lorna Van de Wiele, Marilyn Radler, Lisa Hatlestad from Charlie who could be her brother, Larina Campbell, Ann Ervin, Doug Cameron, Julie Roberts, Barbara Grabell and Janet Bello.

Mandisa and Carme still need help! Please!

Hello all.  Well, I had a horrible weekend.  One of our little rescues is very, very sick.  Little Thoreau, a tiny, 8 lb white boy, is fighting for his life right now.  It might be distemper.

So, I have had little time to do much more than care for him.

But, we are sorely behind in the fundraising for Carme, Mandisa and the rest from the last newsletters.

Carme needs surgery!

The most urgent is CARME BURKE.  Her fund is getting there, but we still lack over $700 as of right now before she can have surgery.  It was scheduled for last week, but unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, we had to reschedule it for a future data.  We can’t go forward until her funds are ready.

So far, we’ve raised $2800.50 for Carme’s surgical fund.  The estimate to get her whole is right at $3500.  We have to reschedule her surgery for a future date – not to worry, thought, Dr. Beale will be back to do the surgery later in December if we can raise the funds.

Mae, Mandisa and Edge. Scary expenses. Still need help!

We raised quite a bit toward our huge October bill.  But we still need a lot of help!

As of right now, Mae’s fund has $35 and still needs $1215.  Mandisa, who is scheduled for surgery at the Animal Eye Clinic has $580 but still needs $720.  Finally, little Edge Galvez, who had a mis-placed pin in his leg has only $50 but needs another $700.

Please help us continue to help these little dogs.  If you have ideas for fundraisers – like art to auction/raffle, garage sales, things that can be sold, etc. please let me know what you can do to help.  We, like all rescues right now, are struggling with way, way too many dogs and way, way to little funding!

You know the economy is hitting everyone hard.  We’re working as hard as we can to not allow any of these very needy dogs to die!  Please help!

We thought Halloween and scary times were long gone, but no, we just got the October statement from our vet.  AHHHHH!

This past year, our vet costs at our regular vet went up – by almost double.  I can’t complain, the prices we paid were very low and he hadn’t raised prices for several years.  But, yikes, during this economic downturn, with more and more dogs being homeless and with a lot less disposable income, times for us are hard.

In the past, we typically handled most expenses other than very expensive surgeries with adoption fees, local fundraisers and general donations.  Today, we’re hurting.

Just this past month, here are just a couple of the things we had to do…

Mae Davis – you know what all Mae has been through – she’s on the cusp of being completely FIXED, but the surgical site inside her mouth opened up TWICE in the past couple of months, requiring additional surgeries.  GCVS gave us a huge break and charged only $500 and $750 for two separate surgeries to repair the damage, but still.  We need help now with Mae’s final (I hope) bill.

Thanks to Vicki Wakefield and Gail Ciesielski for the donations to date.

Mandisa Katy - Mandisa had to have urgent bladderstone surgery.  I didn’t even have time to do a blog about her until after the fact.  So far, we’ve raised $580.  She’s recovering well, but we still need $800 to pay little Mandisa’s bills.

Thanks to Fur Kids, Barbara Moran, Sandra Brehm, Jeannie Flexer, Gail Ciesielski, Sunny and Robert Goldberg, Linda Downs, Anna Dee Lastick, Christine Hutchison, Jill Kirk, Lorraine Bucklan, Lorna Van De Weile, Marilyn Radler, Lisa Hatlestad from Charlie who could be Mandisa’s brother, Larina Campbell, Ann Ervin, Doug Cameron, Gail Ciesielski, Julie Roberts, Barbara Grabell, Janet Bello for donations for Mandisa so far.  If you can help us raise the rest for her, please DONATE for her via PAYPAL HERE

Edge Galvez – Edge came to us from another rescue.  He had orthopedic surgery at a regular vet to fix a broken leg.  Unfortunately weeks after the break was repaired with a pin and plate, he still wasn’t using the leg.  We took him to GCVS to Dr. Brian Beale for a consult.  Dr. Beale thought the pin looked like it was either too long for Edge’s leg or that it had shifted.  Regardless, it seemed that the pin was causing pain.  Dr. Beale removed the pin and charged us only $750.  Within five days, Edge was using the leg.  This one put us in the hole.  Can you please help us so we can continue to help these little fluffies.

Thanks to Amanda Tellez for donations for Edge to date.  If you can help, CLICK HERE to donate to Edge via Paypal.

We so much appreciate all of you.

Mandisa had her bladderstone surgery – fund is at 20% – help!

She had surgery Thursday – had to happen.  Her stone was just too big.  She’s back now and recovering.

But, of course, now we have to pay her bill.  So far, her fund is at $235 thanks to the following generous people:

Fur Kids, Barbara Moran, Sandra Brehm, Jeannie Flexer, Gail Ciesielski, Sunny and Robert Goldberg, Linda Downs, Anna Dee Lastick.

But, we are still far underwater with this one.  We still need $1015 and her bill just arrived in my email.  YIKES

We need a total of $1250 to get her whole and up for adoption.  This also covers the $300 for her eye surgery scheduled before Thanksgiving.

URGENT: Mandisa Katy has a HUGE bladderstone!

I’ve noticed for a couple of days that Mandisa was urinating a lot.  Many times, small amounts.  This typically means bladder infection or worse.  We put her on antibiotics in case it was an infection.  Yesterday, there was blood in her urine and I watched her try to go for at least one full minute with absolutely no production.  So, into the car she went (I was supposed to go pick up a Bichon for another rescue, but…) and down to the vet.

The urinalysis showed an insignificant amount of bacteria so we did the next step – an x-ray.  HUGE bladderstone practically filling the bladder.  Poor baby.  So, needs surgery right now.

The total cost, including x-rays, surgery and post-op hospitalization is around $950.  HELP!  I’m still trying to raise funds for little Carme’s broken leg, and now this.  This is a desperate need!  Please help so Mandisa can get better!

Mandisa is also scheduled for surgery on her eyes just before Thanksgiving.  We’ll need another $300 for that so I’m rolling that into this plea.  I hope you don’t mind.

We need a total of $1250 to get her whole and up for adoption.

Please DONATE for her via PAYPAL HERE

I have to run to another vet appointment now but will get a picture of her posted as soon as I can.

Thanks for your understanding.  I think I bit off more than I can chew this week.
